The Department of Economics and Social Sciences, Institute of Social Ecology is currently seeking a
Postgraduate Research Associate

Extent of employment: 30 hours per week
Duration of employment: as of now, limited to a period of 4 years

Allocation in compliance with the Col ective Agreement for University Staff to job group: B1
Gross monthly salary: (depending on previous eligible experience) at least: € 2.684,10
(payable 14 times per year)
The Institute of Social Ecology (SEC) is a team-oriented research environment that encompasses
natural and social sciences as well as humanities in the field of inter- and transdisciplinary
sustainability research. The position is associated with the professorship of Social Ecology (Univ. Prof.
Dr. Melanie Pichler) and is expected to conduct qualitative social science research on social-
ecological transformations that is connected to quantitative and qualitative research approaches at
SEC. Specifical y, the person is expected to conduct an independent PhD project on political
dimensions of social-ecological transformations (e.g. conflicts, power relations, policy approaches,
structural barriers or potentials in specific sectors, countries and/or from specific perspectives).
Responsibilities
- Participate in the application for third party funding
- Publish in scientific journals and present at national and international conferences
- Teach individual and collaborative courses in MA programs and participate in further
education on teaching
- Participate in third mission activities
- Participate in self-governance and institutional development at the institute, department
and university level
Required skil s and qualifications
- Diploma degree in social science (e.g. political science, sociology, anthropology),
interdisciplinary sustainability science (e.g. ecological economics, natural resource
management, political ecology) or other equivalent university degree
- Language skills: English, German
- Proven ability to conduct an independent PhD project on political dimensions of social-
ecological transformations
- Experience in interdisciplinary sustainability research and motivation to work in an
interdisciplinary team
- Experience in qualitative social research
- Collaborative and communicative skills for working in an interdisciplinary team
- Scientific writing and presentation skills
Desirable skil s and qualifications
- Experience in writing applications for third-party funding
- Skills for and experience in third mission (e.g. non-scientific writing, engagement in civil
society initiatives)
- Didactic skills
