The Division seeks to support Member States in building their capacity to access technologies, to share good practices and to develop safe and effective approaches across all aspects of research reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, decommissioning, radioactive waste management and environmental remediation.The Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section (NFCMS) assists interested Member States in the development of safe, environmentally friendly, economically viable, proliferation-resistant and sustainable fuel cycle options and it encourages information exchange on the exploration, mining and processing of uranium and thorium, on the design, manufacturing and performance of nuclear fuels, on the management of spent fuel, and on the development of advanced and innovative nuclear fuels and fuel cycles.Main PurposeAs a member of a team reporting directly to the Section Head, the Uranium Resources Specialist implements the activities related to the evaluation of uranium and thorium from the standpoint of exploration, resources estimation/classification and availability, economics and sustainability in current and future reactor fuel cycle systems, and operational aspects of the current uranium production cycle. This involves:
– Bringing together international experts by organizing technical meetings to prepare state-of-the-art and best practice reports in the areas of uranium exploration, resource delineation, , estimation and classification; mine geology; uranium , processing; and related environmental protection issues;
– Maintaining information data on the abundance and distribution of existing identified uranium and thorium resources;
– Participating in peer reviews of uranium production cycle activities and facilities, and;
– Supporting technical cooperation (TC) projects by organizing review missions training programmes, expert missions and workshops in various fields to develop technical aspect of capacity building programmes.RoleThe Uranium Resources Specialist is: (1) a programme developer and implementer, assisting in planning and developing IAEA’s programmes on uranium exploration and resources; (2) a scientific secretary/technical expert, planning and leading Consultancy and Technical Meetings; (3) a mission leader, planning and leading moderately complex review missions; and (4) a technical and project officer evaluating TC projects, and promoting and assessing coordinated research projects (CRPs) in the area of uranium resources.Functions / Key Results ExpectedContribute specialized knowledge and experience to the planning, development and implementation of the IAEA’s programme supporting requesting Member States in uranium resources development for nuclear fuel cycles by defining a pathway to preparedness for sustainable uranium mining and processing.
Plan and lead complex Technical Meetings/Workshops on uranium resources, resource estimation and classification, and production, including proposing their subject, preparing their scope, selecting participants, coordinating the drafting of technical reports and documents, as well as the preparation of e-tools and the maintenance of data bases.
Plan and lead complex training activities, preparatory meetings and follow-up visits, and the assessment of uranium resources and production needs; provide technical input to the preparation of mission reports.
Participate in peer reviews of facilities involved in the uranium production cycle, such as mine sites and uranium extraction facilities.
Evaluate TC projects, develop action plans and plans, organize and participate in seminars, workshops, expert missions and training courses.
Promote, coordinate and evaluate moderately complex CRPs among participating Member States and conduct moderately complex studies and assessments related to issues and trends.
Develop international recommendations and guidance on uranium exploration/production with a view to addressing Member States’ specific needs.Competencies and ExpertiseCore Competencies Name Definition
