As a driver of innovation, TU Wien fosters close collaboration with business and industry and contributes to the prosperity of society.At the Faculty of Technical Chemistry at TU Wien, the position of a University Professor in the field of Chemoenzymatische Katalyse with permanent (full-time) contractual employment is to be filled as of October 2025.This is a professorship regulated by § 99 para. 4 of the Universities Act 2002 (UG).This professorship is established according to § 99(4) UG 2002. The position is exclusively available to TU Wien lecturers in accordance with § 94(2)(2) UG (permanent civil servant status according to §§ 170 ff BDG, with the official title of “Associate University Professor”) or associate professors (§ 27 Collective Agreement) at TU Wien.The professorship for Chemoenzymatic Catalysis is intended to strengthen the primary research areas of “Sustainability, Energy, Environment” and “Bioscience Technologies” at TU Wien, as outlined in the Faculty of Technical Chemistry’s development plan. The focus lies on chemo- and biocatalytic technologies. Furthermore, the position aims to foster and strengthen an interdisciplinary scientific environment (Cluster of Excellence – Circular Bioengineering) through collaboration with existing research activities at TU Wien and other universities and research institutions.The Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry at TU Wien pursues synergistic research approaches at the interface between organic synthetic chemistry and biosciences as part of the “Organic and Biological Chemistry” research area. The advertised § 99(4) Professorship in Chemoenzymatic Catalysis aims to significantly enhance this area, deepen networking among existing expertise, exploit synergies, and, above all, enable research activities in the development and mechanistic understanding of chemo- and biocatalytic cascades, focusing on producing high-value chemical compounds.Chemoenzymatic Catalysis focuses on and the successful applicant’s research is expected to encompass:

  • Experience in chemo- and biocatalysis, focusing on designing and implementing sustainable synthetic cascades
  • Experience in organic synthetic chemistry (experimental methods, purification, and structural characterization of substances)
  • Expertise in biocatalysis, protein chemistry, and microbiology (e.g., cultivation of microorganisms, protein expression)
  • Experience in genetic manipulation of microorganisms (e.g., Escherichia coli and phototrophic bacteria)
  • Ideally, expertise in the chemical modification of enzymatic catalyst systems
  • Experience in characterizing and optimizing (bio)chemical reactions and their catalysts (e.g., reaction kinetics, stability, enzyme assays, protein engineering, high-throughput methods)
  • Proven experience collaborating with national and/or international scientific and industrial partners
  • Experience leading publicly funded research projects
  • Successful acquisition of a project under the Faculty of Technical Chemistry’s Excellence Initiative, such as FWF-Excellence, FWF-START, ERC, or Christian Doppler Laboratory
  • Experience in leading a research group

ResponsibilitiesIn addition to research, the responsibilities of a university professor at TU Wien include teaching (in German and English) in Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programs and participating in the management of the institute and faculty. The primary teaching focus will be on imparting the necessary knowledge and methods in the fields of chemo- and biocatalysis and sustainability. Teaching activities in the Bachelor’s program in Technical Chemistry and the Master’s program in Technical Chemistry are expected to be expanded or newly established accordingly.The Faculty of Technical Chemistry, one of TU Wien’s eight faculties, plays an active role in the national and international research sector and enjoys an excellent reputation. Research focuses include (i) Chemistry and Materials Technology, (ii) Sustainability, Energy, and Environment, and (iii) Bioscience Technologies. Close cooperation within the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry and the Faculty of Technical Chemistry, as well as with related institutes in other faculties, is expected.Your profile:

  • A doctorate or PhD degree (or an equivalent scientific qualification) obtained at a domestic or equivalent foreign university or research institution
  • International postdoctoral experience at a university or another research institution (ideally several years)
  • A habilitation (venia docendi) obtained at a domestic or equivalent foreign university, or an equivalent scientific qualification for teaching
  • Scientific reputation, evidenced by publications in internationally renowned scientific journals, patents, scientific presentations, peer-review activities, organization of scientific events, awards, etc.
  • Proven ability to network, demonstrated through cooperation with foreign universities and research institutions
  • Experience in acquiring, managing, and leading research projects
  • Qualification and willingness, as well as experience, in leading a research group at TU Wien
  • Successful acquisition of a topic-relevant project under the Faculty of Technical Chemistry’s Excellence Initiative, such as FWF-Clusters of Excellence, FWF-START, ERC, or Christian Doppler Laboratory
  • Pedagogical and didactic aptitude for academic teaching in the specified subject area in English and German
  • Experience supervising student research projects
  • Ability and willingness to participate in the management of the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry and the Faculty of Technical Chemistry
  • Social and gender competence, as well as experience in promoting junior researchers and women.
  • Willingness to relocate to Vienna (on-site presence required)
  • If sufficient German language skills are not available, the willingness to learn German promptly to enable participation in the management of the institute, faculty, and university committees, as well as teaching in undergraduate programs
