Tenure-Track Professor in the field of Single Cell Microbiology
Offer DescriptionThe University of Vienna is internationally renowned for its excellence in teaching and research, and counts more than 7,500 academics from all disciplines. This breadth of expertise offers unique opportunities to address the complex challenges of modern society, to develop comprehensive new approaches, and educate the problem-solvers of tomorrow from a multidisciplinary perspective. At the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science, the University of Vienna seeks to appoint aTenure-Track Professor in the field ofSingle Cell MicrobiologyThe position:Global biogeochemical cycles are largely driven by the metabolic activity of microorganisms. Despite the importance of microorganisms, the controls on their activity and their interactions with their biotic and abiotic environments remain poorly understood. Understanding the tight coupling between microorganisms and their environment is only possible by considering the scale of single cells, the nature and consequences of single cell activities and their interactions. This position aims to improve the understanding of the links between single cell activities and ecosystem processes. We seek applicants with an outstanding track record and international reputation in single-cell microbiology, with a focus on linking microbial activity to environmental processes. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, single-cell nutrient cycling in aquatic systems, interactions of different microbial functional groups at oxic-anoxic interfaces, or metabolic and phenotypic heterogeneity of microorganisms. Applicants must demonstrate expertise in stable isotope methods (e.g., isotope uptake at single-cell and bulk level, rate measurements), techniques for visualization of microbes in complex environments (e.g., fluorescence in situ hybridization), cultivation of environmentally relevant microorganisms, and extensive fieldwork experience.Your academic profile:
