Tenure-Track Professor in the Field of Jewish History of Austria
Universität Wien
As part of the Ashkenazi linguistic and cultural area, the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states define the geographical focus of this tenure track professorship, which is dedicated to the history of Jewish culture, society and ideas in the period between 1500 and 1930. Successful applicants are recognised for their research on Ashkenaz and will complement the profile of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research with their source-oriented and interdisciplinary work, and contribute to the expansion of research networks on Jewish history. Successful candidates are also expected to take on the academic leadership of the extra-university “Institute for Jewish History in Austria“ in St. Pölten. This dual role, together with active involvement in teaching and in the Doctoral School, creates a number of synergies in research, external funding and networking. Participation in the research focus ‘Austria in its Environment’; of the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies also offers numerous opportunities to develop one’s own research in an intellectually stimulating network. The Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna is home to all the historical departments at the University of Vienna. The institutes, working groups and specialised libraries that exist today are spread across various locations at the University of Vienna. The Institute for Austrian Historical Research, which was founded in 1854, has a special status among all other departments. The Institute was initially run as an organisational unit of the federal government and was integrated into the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies in 2016. The Institute of Austrian Historical Research is an internationally recognised research and training centre for methodology and the cultivation of historical auxiliary sciences (palaeography, documentary studies, archaeology, source studies, etc.) in their cultural-historical context on the one hand, and for research into the history of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states on the other. Through its close institutional connection with the Institute for Jewish History of Austria in St. Pölten, the Institute has established an additional focus in the field of Jewish history. The Institute cooperates with the Institute of Jewish Studies, which specialises in philological and religious studies, as well as with the Institutes of History and Contemporary History.Your academic profile:
