Let’s shape the future together!Your personal sphere of play:The Centre for Teacher Education at the University of Vienna is home to the Austrian Educational Competence Centre Biology (AECC Biology), which is headed by Prof. Andrea Möller. The centre conducts scientific research in the field of teaching and learning of Biology. Through innovative, practice-oriented national and international research, teaching and development projects we contribute to the advancement of biology education in schools and other educational institutions. We aim to use the results of our research to derive evidence-based recommendations for school practice, education policy, and the initial and continuing professional development of biology teachers. The current research foci of our team are education for sustainable development (ESD), environmental education, climate change education and biodiversity education, as well as scientific inquiry, particularly experimental skills and understanding the nature of science (NOS).
At AECC Biology, you can expect to work with a team of highly engaged researchers at Austria’s largest biology education facility. We offer innovative national and international state-of-the-art research projects, interdisciplinary collaborations and a large network of research partners around the world. We also offer multiple award-winning third-mission projects, an extensive network of partner schools and the opportunity to work with a dedicated team of seconded in-service teachers. You will also have the opportunity to use and help to shape two unique biology education facilities in Austria: the “AECC Biology Teaching-and-Learning Lab” and the “Bee.Ed Research and Teaching Apiary” with an attached biodiversity garden. These two facilities congenially combine third mission activities for school classes with innovative biology teacher training and state-of-the-art biology education research.
The position is preferably to be filled as of September 1, 2025 and is initially limited to 4 years. In the event of a positive evaluation at the end of the fixed-term period, the position can be made permanent.Your future tasks:Your primary area of responsibility is the further establishment and management of the research at the AECC Biology, a long-term research infrastructure led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andrea Möller. The tasks include research support (covering the entire research cycle from design, data collection, analysis, data curation and management, interpretation, and writing of publications), funding acquisition, engagement in third-mission, administrative and organizational activities, as well as the management of the two research facilities TLL and Bee.Ed.Expected:

  • Professional support and active participation in research and administration of the AECC Biology research group’s future and ongoing projects such as HARP, VGEOSciEd and BiodiverCity Hopping.
  • Complement and expand existing research expertise at the AECC Biology in the field of Biology Education
  • Establishment and expansion of an independent research profile reflecting the main objectives of the AECC Biology
  • Project applications and acquisition of third-party funding at national (e.g. FWF) and EU level
  • Professional support in the mentorship and supervision of AECC Biology’s early career scientists (PhD candidates)
  • Publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals
  • Design and organization of research events and national/international conferences
  • Contributions at national and international conferences and universities
  • Independent teaching of courses in the field of biology education to the extent of the collective agreement provisions (four semester hours per week), and Co-Supervision of Master theses (MEd Biology)
  • Participation in the development and design of future objectives and milestones of the AECC Biology group and participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance of those
  • Participation in AECC Biology administration (related to research, teaching, public outreach/third-mission and national tasks)
  • Contributing to the networking of the AECC Biology with relevant national and international research institutions in the field of biology and science education, as well as exchange with the public sector (e.g. schools, ministry of education) and broader society
  • Developing and maintaining a AECC Biology reseach database, as well as data management and curation
  • Management of the AECC Biology’s two teaching and research facilities (Teaching and Learning Lab, Bee-Ed Research- and Teaching Apiary)

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed doctorate/PhD studies in the field of biology education
  • Postdoctoral research experience
  • Proven research expertise and initiative in the field of biology education through international publications in renowned peer-relevant media
  • Interest in research in the field of education for sustainable development, environmental education or climate change education
  • Experience and knowledge in teaching Biology, e.g. teaching at school or non-formal learning settings such as museums or as part of citizen science projects
  • Experience in supervising students (BEd, MEd, PhD)
  • Excellent knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative methods of empirical social science/educational psychology/teaching and learning research
  • Excellent knowledge of quantitative and/or qualitative statistical analysis methods (experience in statistical programs such as SPSS, R, MAXQDA)
  • Experience in research management and in leading project staff
  • High level of written and oral communication skills in German
  • IT user skills
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills (at least C1)
  • Cooperative team player with high social/communication skills, reliable and responsible

Also expected:

  • Interest in a career in research administration and management, and interest in contributing to the further establishment and organization of an interdisciplinary research group and network
  • Experience and knowledge in acquiring third-party funding
  • Experience in planning and organizing events (e.g., workshops, conferences, third mission)
  • Experience in participating in research projects
  • Research experience in international teams, research experience abroad
  • Teaching experience in biology education on a university level

Desirable:

  • Research experience in the field of Education for Sustainable Development, Environmental Education or Climate Change Education
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • Experience in interdisciplinary research
