Offer DescriptionThe University of Klagenfurt wants to attract more qualified women for professorships.The University of Klagenfurt is pleased to announce the open position of aProfessor of English Literatureat the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Education, in compliance with either the provisions of § 98 or § 99 Austrian Universities Act. This is a full-time position, available from 1st of October 2025. The decision of either § 98 (unlimited term) or § 99 (five years fixed term) depends on the candidates’ qualifications and will be made upon appointment.The University of Klagenfurt is a young, vibrant, and innovative university located at the intersection of Alpine and Mediterranean cultures in an area that offers exceptionally high quality of life. - Representing the field of English Literature in teaching and research with a focus on British and Postcolonial Literatures, particularly literatures of the 19th and 20th centuries and with special consideration of perspectives from Cultural Studies
- Teaching in the degree programmes of the Department of English (Bachelor and Master and PhD levels)
- Advising and mentoring of students and supervision of B.A. and M.A. theses
- Advising and mentoring of junior academic colleagues
- Contributing to the strategic development of the Department of English and to its international standing
- Active participation in university management and assuming leadership duties

- Relevant university degree and doctoral degree/PhD in English Literature and Cultural Studies
- Habilitation or equivalent qualification in English Literature (focus on British and/or Postcolonial Literatures)
- Excellent research and publication record in the aforementioned areas of specialization
- High international impact in the relevant research areas
- Expertise in the field of Cultural Studies
- Proof of university level teaching experience in the focal topics of the position and tertiary level teaching skills
- Excellent English language skills
- Good German language skills (B2) are expected, or the willingness to acquire B2 proficiency within two years of assuming the position
- Leadership skills and capacity for teamwork
Specific Requirements
- Comprehensive experience in international research co-operations
- Expertise in the fields of Film-/TV-Studies and/or New Media-/Game Studies
- Willingness and ability to promote the development of the subject of English Literature
- Willingness and ability for interdisciplinary co-operations
- Experience designing and carrying out third-party funded projects
- Experience in university self-management, where appropriate, with leadership role
- Willingness to contribute to the development of the Department and dissemination skills
- Willingness to co-operate across disciplines and to contribute to research foci at the Faculty of Humanities and the university (e.g. Visual Culture, Gender Studies, Digital Humanities, PhD programme COINT)
- Expertise in the field of gender mainstreaming and diversity management

The prerequisites are subject to examination on a case-by-case basis.
