This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.The Division of Human Health is organized into four Sections whose objectives are to enhance the capabilities of Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance.The Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Imaging Section’s primary objective is to enhance Member States’ capabilities to use nuclear medicine and other imaging technologies efficiently, mainly, but not limited to cancer and cardiac diseases, and for undertaking related basic and clinical research. To achieve those goals, special attention is given to the preparation of educational resources, guidelines and guidance documents.Main PurposeAs a member of a team led by the Section Head, the Nuclear Medicine Physician coordinates and supports research, provides technical and advisory services and collects, analyses and disseminates information related to the application of nuclear medicine techniques using unsealed radiation sources in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and in basic and applied research in the field of human health with a view to meeting development goals related to the provision of health services.RoleThe Nuclear Medicine Physician is: (1) a technical adviser and research coordinator, providing high level expertise and advice, helping to ensure the efficient and effective development and implementation of coordinated research projects and trainings; (2) an adviser to the Section, the Division and other IAEA staff on programmatic, scientific and technical matters related to his/her field of expertise; and (3) a support provider for collaborative efforts aimed at a synergistic approach to nuclear medicine development in Member States.Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Develop and implement coordinated research projects on the application of nuclear medicine techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, including the evaluation of research contracts and the publication of results.
  • Organize scientific and advisory meetings, serve in scientific missions and represent the IAEA at relevant meetings and conferences.
  • Develop and implement projects aiming at applying quality management in nuclear medicine and diagnostic imaging practices in Member States.
  • Support the technical cooperation programme through the evaluation of relevant project requests, by developing work plans and assisting with the implementation of expert assignments, training and the purchase of equipment and other relevant items.
  • Coordinate work with other national and international organizations and support the Section’s collaborative efforts with leading scientific societies aimed at nuclear medicine development in Member States.
  • Prepare technical and scientific reports, proceedings and scientific publications.
  • Collaborate on joint initiatives and cross-cutting activities within the Agency.

Radiation Medicine Clinical Practice In-depth knowledge of and proven practical experience in the clinical applications of diagnostic nuclear medicine, including cardiology, neurology and oncology as well as up-to-date knowledge in hybrid imaging e.g. PET/CT, SPECT/CT and PET/MR.
Radiology Diagnostic Radiology Proven knowledge of diagnostic radiology in particular computer tomography and magnetic resonance.

  • Master’s Degree – Advanced university degree in Medicine with a post-graduate specialization degree in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Other – Postgraduate certificate in education an asset.
  • Minimum of seven years of professional experience in the field of clinical nuclear medicine and in conducting clinical research, possibly in an academic environment.
  • Good national and international standing in the area of his/her specialization and association with international societies and/or organizations.

Experience in managing international projects following results-based principles. * Recent publications in international peer reviewed journals and/or other relevant publications.

  • Advanced experience in medical education.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
