Reference no.: 4490The University of Vienna plans to expand the existing Research Data Management services by offering discipline-specific support through the new Data Stewardship program. The Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy (Fakultät für Geowissenschaften, Geographie und Astronomie / FGGA) is therefore looking for a highly motivated person (m/f/d) with an academic background in one or more of the FGGA discipline/s and/or data stewardship for the position of Data Steward. Ideally, you have experience in the areas of data management and processing, quality control, data evaluation and analysis to understand reseacher’s needs and offer tailored support. This position is temporary for a period of 3 years. By mutual agreement and if the corresponding funds are available, there may be an option for an extended/permanent employment.Job description:As Data Steward at the FGGA, you will support researchers in the sustainable handling of research data and the development of strategies for discipline-specific and cross-disciplinary Research Data Management (RDM) that complies with the FAIR principles and makes data findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable. In this position shared between the FGGA and the Research Data Management Team of the University Library, you will inhabit an important role at the intersection between research and research infrastructure. Your workplace is located at the Dean’s Office of the FGGA. Together with the researchers at FGGA, experts from central research support services (University Library, Vienna University Computer Center, Research Services and Career Development), as well as Data Stewards from other faculties/centres, you will further develop the RDM at FGGA and University. You can expect a diverse and forward-looking work environment that offers room for personal growth and the unique opportunity to actively shape and further develop this role.Your tasks:include, in particular

• Advice and support to researchers in the area of RDM and Open Science, such as assisting them in writing data management plans, organizing their data, and preparing their data for publication in repositories
• Design and development of innovative discipline-specific services in the area of RDM
• Building awareness for sustainable RDM
• Development of workflows, policies and standards for RDM
• Design and delivery of needs-based training on RDM and Open Science
• Conducting needs assessments among the FGGA faculty
• Networking in university internal, national and international initiatives

Your profile:

• Master’s degree or Diploma in an FGGA discipline and/or experience in data stewardship in combination with a Master’s degree or Diploma in a different discipline such as Data Science
• Strong interest or experience in the area of RDM and Open Science
• Good knowledge of research practice, as well as a broad understanding of how research operates, and how data and software underpin reproducible research
• Knowledge of Python and Jupyter services
• Experience with designing and delivering training
• Very good command of written and spoken English
• Good command of written and spoken German or a willingness to acquire it
• Willingness to learn
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Creativity and innovative spirit
• Service orientation, ability to work under pressure and flexibility
• Independent, accurate and systematic way of working
• Ability to work in a team
