Job summaryThis post is a clinical fellow post working with two paediatric sub-specialties, Paediatric infectious diseases and paediatric haematology, including bone marrow transplant. The post holder will be based at St Marys Hospital in Paddington and covers inpatients for these specialties in day time hours. The out of hours portion of this role is in general paediatrics, working with a registrar based on the ward at all times. This post is not suitable for anyone who has never worked in a paediatric job previously. The post is for 6 months from March-August 2025. It is a great opportunity to gain a ‘taster’ experience of these exciting sub-specialties.Main duties of the jobThe clinical fellow will cover the inpatients on Grand Union and Great Western wards with support from specialty registrars and the wider multi-disciplinary team. There are daily consultant ward rounds. Education weeks are built into the rota to support other experiences, including outpatient clinics or time in the emergency department. The rota includes weekends, evenings and nightshifts, caring for the wider paediatric patients, but not including the emergency department, neonatal or paediatric intensive care units, which have a separate rota. They also have responsibility for the immediate primary management of children admitted to the unit. The main clinical areas in which this clinical fellow will be working is on the inpatient wards, and the Day case unit with the paediatric infectious diseases, paediatric haematology and on occasions the paediatric surgical teams. On-call experience includes general paediatrics and paediatric acute admissions and emergencies.The SHOs are allocated to the ward, in blocks to optimize continuity.The paediatric team manages children with severe, complex or unusual (HIV, TB, tropical) infections.The haematology team looks after children undergoing BMT, with complications of Sickle cell as well as shared care oncology patients. The BMT unit is integrated with Grand Union Ward where there are four bone marrow suites with HEPA filtration. The unit specialises in BMT for haemoglobinopathies and bone marrow failure syndromes such as Fanconi anaemia. SHOs are strongly encouraged to attend outpatient clinics during this part of the job. There is a Wednesday morning theatre list for line insertions, bone marrow harvests and aspirates and liver biopsies.New patterns of working demand excellence in handover and communication between all members of the department and a team approach to patient care.
