This role requires demonstrable expert knowledge of the waste and resource management sector and experience of developing and delivering resource efficiency and sustainability initiatives into a diverse portfolio of clients. We provide a hybrid working environment, but also see the benefit in our staff having access to one of our offices to engage with colleagues – the preferred locations for the role are Bradford-on-Avon, Bristol, Shrewsbury and Edinburgh, but SLR has offices across the UK.We are in a period of ambitious and rapid growth and to meet client needs we are looking for someone with experience and a passion for working in the resource management, sustainability, and circular economy fields. SLR’s diverse nature, centred firmly on sustainability themes, presents an exciting opportunity for the post holder to work across multiple disciplines, both in the UK and overseas.Our team is a leading global provider of consultancy services to the waste and resource management sector, providing advice to a range of clients including local authorities, waste producers, the waste management industry, its regulators and investors. We provide practical advice on all waste and resource types, including municipal, household, commercial, industrial and hazardous waste. Our specialisms are expanding to meet the challenges associated with sustainability, circular economy and climate impacts, enabling us to provide comprehensive end to end resource management services.Our client & technical service offerings include:
- Waste strategy, options appraisal and plan development;
- Service reviews and infrastructure assessments;
- Circularity and sustainability studies;
- Waste logistics assessments;
- Public sector waste support (e.g. procurement);
- Private sector waste company support (e.g. bid development);
- Advice to the financial sector (e.g. investment due diligence); and
- Supporting construction companies and waste technology providers.
The roleWorking with support from our experienced and expert team, you will be given the opportunity to lead project management and technical delivery tasks, while supporting business development activities including bid development. You will be confident in the management of technical data and the development of high quality reports and other project related outputs, and will be comfortable and confident in engaging with internal and external clients and stakeholders at all levels, in both written and verbal formats. You will have the opportunity to assist senior members of different disciplines (for example the Process Engineering, ESG and Energy Advisory teams) within SLR in undertaking similar tasks, potentially including site-based work.The main objectives of the role will be to:
- Support the ongoing growth of the Sustainable Waste Management team, identifying and reacting to opportunities identified using both reactive and proactive approaches to existing and new clients and contacts.
- Guide clients through service reviews, identifying and presenting service improvement opportunities, best practice and innovation.
- Support clients to develop solutions to meet sustainability objectives
- Act as a trusted technical advisor across all aspects of resources and waste management services.
- Take a lead role on the design, development, management and presentation of detailed data driven models.
- Lead and contribute to the development of high quality and successful proposals, meeting SLR’s strategic and financial objectives, and supporting principles of continuous improvement.
- Support and manage projects to ensure client and business objectives are achieved, maintaining budgets and forecasts accurately.
- Identify and contribute to internal company cross selling opportunities.
- Support colleagues to develop knowledge and skills to widen capabilities.

The postholder will be expected to contribute to and lead project management and delivery tasks, and support bid development and wider business development activities.In particular we are looking for someone who is confident in leading waste data management tasks, developing and evolving waste flow, modelling and carbon assessments. You will have worked on the management of large datasets and will have experience of interrogating existing data to inform and model detailed long term projections in areas including feedstock availability and treatment / disposal costs.Everyone is different and can bring different skills to a post, but these are the sorts of qualities we expect the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience of working with or for commercial entities, local authorities, contractors and / or consultancies in a related field.
- Expert knowledge, both theoretical and in operational environments, of resources and waste management and sustainability solutions.
- A good understanding of current and future challenges facing public and private sector entities.
- An interest in business development, with the ability to develop opportunities from existing and new contacts.
- Experience in identifying, winning and delivering successful projects.
- Ambitious and proactive.
- Degree qualified in Environmental Science or Engineering or equivalent (ideally master’s degree).
- Chartered membership of a professional body.
